NBA STATS FOR 08-09 SEASON THRU WK 1

In NBA, SPORTS on November 4, 2008 at UTC.53.30.

The NBA season is underway after just the first week we can already see trends with some of the elite players. The cream always rises to the top. Though some distinctions aren’t necessarily popular among  players, like  turnovers per game. Most stats are just that numbers that don’t always reflect a players ability, contribution or importance on either side of the ball. Indeed, some qualities can’t be measured empirically, such as hustle & leadership.

So, it is with all this in mind that we take a look at some notable NBA ballers and their individual stat lines through first week of competition. Arguably the sexiest of all stats is the scoring, rebounding, steals, & block leaders.

UP YOU MIGHTY RACE…

In CULTURE, DIASPORA TALK, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS, WORD SOUND & POWER on November 4, 2008 at UTC.50.30.

With the historical nature of this election cycle, its only right to list some of the notable advancements by other African American men & women to the benefit of this country. In 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed the 1st open heart surgery.

Isaac Johnson invented the bicycle. While many Americans might take it for granted, most just can’t live without it, Frederick Jones invented the air conditioner. Today’s ‘gamers’ owe a huge debt to Granville T. Jones who created the electrolyte battery, X-Box, Nintendo, Sony Wii etc. wouldn’t be possible.

When you roll up to that traffic light with the colors of the Kushite (modern day Ethiopia) flag, you can thank Garrett Morgan for his invention: the traffic light. Whenever you go into a high rise building, and don’t want to take the stairs you have a Black man to thank for his invention of the elevator.

Black men have contributed a great deal to the United States of America. When our troops at war need protection from biological warfare, or when fire fighters need protection from toxic smoke they owe their lives a black man who invented the gas mask.

For those of us who learned how to drive a car with a manual transmission, or stick shift we owe the modern convenience of the automatic transmission to a black man. Indeed, the air brakes system for buses, 18 wheel trucks, and other large vehicles owe their safety & security to a black man for that creation.

From the modern day fuse, to the rotary engine black men have created a wealth of products that contemporary citizens enjoy today. When you sign a check, write your name on an application, to bubbling in that candidate of your choice on your ballot you can rest assured that a black man invented the fountain pen!

Harriet Tubman, organizer of the ‘Underground Railroad‘ was the 1st black soldier to serve in the Army! A distinction she earned by her bravery & courage an willingness to return to the south to rescue her people. She carried correspondence as a secret operative for the ‘free’ north and their military personnel.

Madame C.J. Walker has the distinction with being the first African American millionaire with her invention of the straightening comb. An invention that many enjoy the benefits of to this day from every background & walk of life.

This country would pale in comparison with the omission of our advancements of science, industry, and technology. For the LIGHT we use to generate decor, mood, safety exits, and everyday living has its genesis in the carbon filament inside the bulb that allows the LIGHT to shine was created by a black man!

Lest we forget from whence we come, African Americans have stood the test of time as progenitors of life and the creation of many of the luxuries we take for granted everyday. From the lawnmower to the refrigeration methods that keep our food and other items cold, America owes her former ‘enslaved subjects’ a huge debt for our enterprise.

Today is the day of reckoning that all Americans will witness the power, majesty, and humility of the mothers & fathers of civilization. America needs us, and so does the world. Always remember who & what you are and what it means to be swathed in the beautiful black skin you’re in! Its a badge of HONOR!!

So, if & when Barack Obama wins the most powerful office in the world, rest assured that the legacy continues from the pyramids to the projects, from the Great Rift valley to the Valley of Kings, from Mali, Timbuktu & Songhay to Salamenca, Tuskegee, & Bethune Cookman.

HISTORY IS A CURRENT EVENT!!

KNOW THYSELF, AND TO THYSELF BE TRUE!! YA DIG?

UP YOU MIGHTY RACE YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH WHAT YOU WILL…
