Analyzing Race….

In ELECTION 08, HOT BUTTON TOPIC, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, Politics, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS on September 22, 2008 at UTC.01.30.

I’m not a proponent for the plethora for ongoing polls this election season. However, there are times when the polls offer insight into the minds of voters. Such is the case with this latest poll from the Associated Press & Yahoo. The poll was conducted from August 27-September 5, 2008.

AP/YAHOO POLL

White Voters Describe Black Voters As:

  • Complaining                 29%
  • Violent                         20%
  • Lazy                             13%
  • Irresponsible                11%

Discrimination:

  • Blacks feel they face a lot of discrimination        57%
  • Whites feel Black face a lot of Discrimination        9%

As we view this poll, one thing is certain. Black and White voters see the world differently. Indeed, we have divergent experiences based on our cultural, philosophical, and spiritual lense. Though, we live in the same country, who would deny the persecution endured by “minorities” in America today?

Part of this reason, in my view, is its hard for perpetuators of discrimination to view reality from an objective point of view. I mean, the same people that vote, are the same people that idly/actively perpetuate it. My argument is that these same folks that say they don’t belive in pervasive discrimination against blacks are the main culprits of it, by the very perspective they espouse.

Let me say it this way, if 9% agree blacks are discriminated against, on the other hand, there is 91% that don’t agree. That 91% are the self-proclaimed perpetuators of discrimination by default. Its as plain as Black & White. If yu think about it objectively then this underlying fact is plausible with the everyday reality people see in their very lives.

A Woman’s Worth…

In ELECTION 08, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, Politics on September 22, 2008 at UTC.30.30.

In this heated election season everyone who has a conscience is involved in some form or fashion. As the saying goes, “He/she who feels it—knows!” People are organizing from coast to coast, volunteering, making calls, and going door-to-door. People are inspired. People are determined to affect change by any means necessary. Below is an example of the passion exhibited by those involved to get the word out. This was forwarded to me by friends & family in South Florida.

A Woman’s Worth
We’ve come a long way baby
September  2008
By G. Taylor

I have been a mother all of my adult life.  A single working mother. I put off dating, took menial jobs far beneath my qualifications and baked my share of ginger bread cookies for PTA Night, all so that three incredible children could have better. I chose their lives over mine.  I don’t have to tell you that it wasn’t easy. Unfortunately, my story, our story, is not
unique.

We slept in cars, bought groceries with food stamps and prayed for a better day.  When that wasn’t enough, I put myself through school at Emory University and took a part-time job as a staff writer at the Atlanta Journal Constitution.  That was over a decade ago.

Along the way, things got better. I’ve been an executive at two Fortune 500 companies and a practice director at two multinational public relations firms. Today, I own an advertising agency and I’ve authored two novels.  A third and fourth are on the way, God willing. All of this was possible because somebody laid a brick or two on the road for me.

A few weeks ago, I woke in tears.  It was my 40th birthday and certainly not a time for sadness.  Rather, I cried in joy because for the first time I realized and could embrace the value of the struggle.  The bright little girl, who once cried in my arms because we didn’t know where we were going to live, was headed off to Brown University .  The small boy who had been the “man of the house” far too soon was now truly a man.  And the tiny, angelic baby who had come to this world precious and innocent just 15 months after him was now a 16 year old girl headed out to her first job interview.

For all of this, maybe I should be proud of a woman like Sarah Palin. Maybe, just maybe, I should be rejoicing in John McCain’s selected running mate. But I’m not. I’m not “bed wetting liberal” nor am I a “right-wing zealot.” What I am is a working mother.  And I cry foul. I won’t, for a moment, denigrate her experience or lob spit balls at her family.

I will, though, take issue with what she knows.  Or more succinctly, what she does not know.  Living in Alaska , I’m not sure how much she knows about the people living in inner city Baltimore .  I don’t know how much she cares about the 125 murders this summer in Chicago .  I have no idea what she believes about HIV/ AIDS and the havoc it wrecks on Black women or the cancer rates in East St. Louis.  She hasn’t said nary a word about Hurricane Katrina or the infant mortality rates in Appalachia .

I do know that she’s a life-time member of the NRA, a proponent of individuals who wielded the very weapons that killed my father and brother. I do know that she “lives really close to Russia ,” but I’m not so certain she is ready for Putin. I know she wanted to ban books for public libraries and sex education in schools, but that her 17 year old is pregnant and preparing for a shotgun wedding.

I know that she loves her husband enough to allow him (and probably did herself) use her office to settle a personal score–one that the McCain campaign would now like to cover in under a blanket of Juneau snow.  I know that the Alaska Independent Party, and its secessionist platform, was enticing enough for her to attend its conference (and for her husband to become a card carrying member).  Does she love her country? I’m sure.  Enough to support those who want to leave it.

But I have no earthly idea what she knows (or could possibly know) about national domestic policy or foreign diplomacy.  For all of her working class values, she never once mentioned the Middle Class in her diatribe that mocked her opponent’s experience. Having been the mayor of Wasilla (pop. 6,000 at the time) and governor of Alaska (a state a smaller than the county I live in) for a little over a year, she felt she was qualified to do that.. And obviously, so did John McCain. If she’s qualified, then so am I.

But in this country I love, she has been afforded the ability to run.  The very constitution she says doesn’t apply to the men at Guantanamo says she can.  But this is about more than that.
As Gloria Steinem said in a recent Los Angeles Times editorial, “Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It’s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It’s about baking a new pie.”

The good news is thanks to Shirley Chisholm, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Angela Davis, Condoleeza Rice, Anita Hill, Madeline Albright, Maxine Waters, Kathleen Sebelius, Hilary Rodham Clinton and a slew of others, there are 18 million proverbial cracks in the ceiling. Our collective political and economic power is due to the strides (and leaps) they, and others, took on my behalf.I am grateful.  I am deeply humbled to stand on the bricks they’d laid before me.

But, whatever our struggle was (and is) that last thing I want is to be patronized.  Just as I cannot support just any African American who decides to offer themselves up for public service, I will not toss my vote to someone just because we share the same chromosome mix. To do so would dishonor the vow I made to my children, to myself. I did not vote for Al Sharpton, wasn’t old enough (nor would I have) voted for Jesse Jackson and I certainly will not support Sarah Palin.  Identity politics, especially in this case, are a sham of the worst order.

When I cast my vote, it will be for people who will lay more bricks for people like me.  It will be for people who will put diplomacy before war, challenge us all to provide healthcare for the sick, help another child go to college, and check the special interests in Washington .  This fall, I’m not looking for a woman. I’m looking for a brick layer.

I could care less if that person hasn’t spent “enough” time in Washington or can “properly field dress a moose”.. I could care less if that person likes hockey, soccer, football or table tennis.  I could care less if they graduated from Harvard or the University of Iowa .  I’m a Christian, but I could care less if they are down with Deuteronomy, Leviticus or Numbers. I want them to uphold the Constitution.

So no, I will not sit idly by as they attempt to suspend habeas corpus at Guantanamo Bay, engage wiretaps on American citizens without a warrant, and hide behind executive privilege when they are caught firing attorney generals based on how well they tow the Republican line.  I won’t let them cost us $12 billion a month fighting a war that should have never been authorized and never been waged.  Not while working people lose their homes to predatory lenders and watch as we bail out the financial institutions that created the housing crisis.

I will not, in the name of history, vote for a woman like Sarah Palin who does not share my values.
But here’s what I will do. I will continue raising money for Barack Obama. I will get on the phone again and call people in distant states I’ve never met. I will e-mail, call, and knock on doors until the final vote is cast. I do this, not because he shares my skin, but because I admire his principals and he shares my values. I do this because Barack Obama is more than a community organizer, he is a bricklayer. And he sees — just as he sees the light in Michelle’s eyes — my struggle, my worth as a woman

Lose your home, lose your vote?

Below is an open letter theat I recieved via email from the “Color of Change” organization. You may be familiar with them, they helped pay the court costs of the “Jena 6″ in Louisana last year. I found this information to be troubling, and thats why I decided to share this letter and its contents. Please join the struggle to insure voter rights and equality on election day….

Dear Dwayne,

It’s the ugliest attack on voting rights we’ve seen in recent history–if you live in Michigan and you’re in danger of losing your home to foreclosure, Republicans will try to take away your right to vote.1
McCain’s response? Silence.

Like Bush in 2000 and 2004, he’s trying to keep a safe distance from these tactics, while benefiting from them. McCain could end this with a phone call. But he won’t.

It’s voter-suppression at its worst. They’re taking advantage of folks falling on hard times and using it for political gain–kicking people while they’re down. It’s time to hold McCain publicly accountable for this strategy.

GOP plan to suppress votes in MI.

GOP plan to suppress votes in MI.

Will you join us in outing McCain for not denouncing these tactics and invite your friends and family to do the same? It just takes a moment:
http://colorofchange.org/michigan08/?id=2250-650968

For years, Republicans have engaged in “caging”–challenging the eligibility of voters on election day to suppress turnout and intimidate voters.2 They’ll often try to reject voters by claiming they don’t live at the address where they’re registered. This year, they’ve taken it to a new low–the chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, Michigan said last week, “We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses.”3

In other words, they’ll target every voter whose house is on a foreclosure list, and challenge their voting rights on election day. But just because your name is on a list, it doesn’t mean that you’ve lost your home or moved. In fact, many homeowners stay in their homes for months after the foreclosure process has begun, and some people are able to catch up on their payments and reverse the process.4

So why are Republicans illegally targeting homeowners who’ve had a tough time under Bush’s economy? Because they know they’re likely to vote for Democrats, and for Obama for President. In Michigan, over 60% of sub-prime loans (predatory lending) were made to African-Americans.5 And in general, people who’ve been hit hard by the economy are less likely to vote for Republicans. This tactic won’t just affect struggling homeowners–it will cause longer lines and delays at the polls for everyone that lives in a neighborhood with a high number of foreclosures. And that’s the point.

After making the plan public, Michigan Republicans are backtracking and claiming they were misquoted.6 But everything indicates that these are exactly the kinds of tactics they’ll use,7 and they’re just trying to squash an embarrassing story.8

Similar tactics are being used across the country, but the McCain campaign simply sits in the background, quietly benefiting from voter suppression. The Obama campaign is fighting against this plan in the courts,9 but they need our help to expose these dishonorable tactics and make this a national story.
If enough of us step up and connect the dots, we’ll give the press a reason to make the connection between McCain and what’s happening in Michigan. And as we’ve seen in our other campaigns,10 when we stand together behind a clear message, the press covers it and moves our message forward.
Calling on McCain to publicly reject these tactics is just the first step in our campaign to shame the Republican Party for attacking the voting rights of struggling homeowners.

RESTITUTION FROM CORPORATE SLAVE OWNERS

In DIASPORA TALK, FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, PAN-AFRICAN, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS, TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE on September 21, 2008 at UTC.41.30.

17 corporations were involved in a class action lawsuit in 2003. The charge of profiteering on the ’slave trade.” Some of teh companies in the lawsuit includes, but isn’t limited to JPMorgan Chase and FleetBoston; insurance companies (e.g., Aetna and New York Life); railroads (Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific and CSX); tobacco companies (R.J. Reynolds, Brown & Williamson); and a textile manufacturer (WestPoint Stevens).

The lawyers are claiming “unjust enrichment” and breach of human rights laws. They are seeking corporate accountability for the profits made from the “peculiar institution.” The plaintiffs want unspecified damages and the establishment of a fund for the healthcare, housing, education and economic development needs of African-Americans.

In addition, they want a full fledged investigation into the financial underpinnings of the system of slavery. This country has never made an official apology for the greatest crime against humanity. A few tacit remarks from companies who’ve been called out is too little too late, and does nothing to rectify the ongoing effects.

America has nerver atoned for her crime, and too the watchers out there, this financial crisis that afflicts this country is a case of her history catching up. Is it justice?

Many detractors say that this federal lawsuit sets up the government to pay reparations to the descendants of ‘enslaved Africans.’

“The lawsuits claim that predecessors of the financial institutions loaned money to slaveowners and handled the monetary transactions of slavery; that insurance companies insured slaves and slave ships; that railroads forced slaves to build and run rail lines (a railroad rulebook prescribes thirty-nine lashes for recalcitrant slaves); that tobacco companies used slave labor in the tobacco fields; and that textile companies profited from cotton cultivated by slaves and sold the coarse garments slaves were forced to wear.”

Seemingly most early American textile & mercantile industries used the free forced labor of an kidnapped workforce. The information is out there, though one has to wonder why no one has steped forward before to address this.

“Deadria Farmer-Paellmann, a lawyer who is a plaintiff and who almost single-handedly has uncovered the information linking corporations to slavery. “These companies have become multibillion-dollar interests in large part due to the practice of stealing people and stealing their labor,” she said. “Justice requires that they atone for these wrongs by paying restitution.”

There just seems to be a stigma attached to any mention of the slave trade. however, the victims of “slavery” don’t own the conservative perpetuation of denial. A transgression occured at teh expense of a whole race of people. Displacement, disenfranchisement, rape, murder, intimidation, persecution and gross injustices. These crimes must be met with swift justice….

Critics charge that the statue-of-limitations has passed, and that no one alive today was the victim of slavery. That’s a trick, though it does nothing to address culpability. The federal government is trying to blow smoke screens to hide this travesty of human rights.

In truth, our government is frightened to deah to put this information in the hands of the American public for fear of retribution. Although, lying, hiding and misrepresenting the facts do nothing save stkoke the flames of protest, rebellion and divine retribution.

There isn’t one industry in this country that wsn’t affected or influenced by what the ‘enslaved’ persons didn’t inculcate. They built this country. The capitol building where laws are passed to continue the unjust oppression of ‘people of color’, especially those descendants of Africa.

“Additional corporations could include utility companies that used slaves to lay gas lines beneath Southern cities like New Orleans and mining companies that forced slaves to dig for coal, according to USA Today reporter James Cox, who has researched the subject extensively. Media companies like Gannett, Knight Ridder and the Tribune Company have been linked to slavery because their predecessors published ads for runaway slaves. Nor are universities exempt. Advocates are discussing whether schools including Harvard, Brown, Yale and the University of Virginia should be sued because many of their original benefactors were allegedly wealthy slaveowners. “

Is it too late for these victims to come forward? Does it matter if they were present or not? How does the reparations of Eastern Europe after WWI and the “Marshall Plan” factor into all of this? How does the Holocaust with jews an their reparations factor?

What about the Japanese after WWII? Or, even the Hawai nation, how come every nationality in the f*&^%( world can get restitution, but when blacks ask for JUST compensation its a fight. Doesn’t matter, one way or another America will PAY. By choice or by force! I pray she chooses to by choice, though am prepared to if its by force.. The force of moral will!!

Our government has financial policies in place that haven’t changed since the 1930’s.

The Republicans controlled the congress from 1994-2006. The 12 years preceding Democratic control  Jan. 2007-current.

Trickle down economics“, a buzzword for a market economy based on ‘free trade’ & a ‘free market economy’  loosely regulated to allow multinational companies to prosper. (Think Haliburton, Coca-Cola, Boeing).

The American economy that has seen chief executives of corporations recieve “golden parachutes.”  A term used to mitigate neglible sums of cold cash, to the tune of hundreds of millions of *dollar/credits. The last eight years has seen an unprecedented amount of financial gain for many corporations.

On the other hand,  employees have more efficiently performed over the last eight years. Only to see their pay decrease. In fact, a lot have lost their job altogether.  The Republicans, inherited a debt of $4 trillion dollars (credits) according to last reports.

We now have a national debt at $9 trillion dollars (credits).

At the same time, the richest 10% of the American strata has accumulated  $3-4 trillion dollars(credits)  over the last eight yers of the republican administration in the white house.

I use the word credit in place of dollar because it seems that our government has leveraged our ‘blood, sweat & tears to foreign debtor nations that we owe.

HAITI SEEKS REPARATIONS FROM FRANCE

In DIASPORA TALK, FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, HOT BUTTON TOPIC, INTERNATIONAL NEWS, PAN-AFRICAN, ROOTZ & KULCHA, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS, TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE on September 17, 2008 at UTC.03.30.

Haiti’s government and elected officials say that their country was robbed at gun point in broad daylight in 1825. They want the “admitted” thief France to pay $21.7 billion in restitution to their former colonial subjects.

Haiti Charges France $21.7 billion for Indemnity!

Haiti Charges France $21.7 billion for Indemnity!

At the same time, the U.S. government is seeking to destabilize and overthrow the then democratically elected governmetn of Jean Bertrand Aristide. Could these two factor be linked? Yes, remember when Haiti waged its insurrection from 1789-1804 they defeated not only France, but America, Spain & Britain as well.

Haitian goverment officials have investigated the “1825 Agreement” that forced the island nation to repay 150 million francs in exchange for its liberty. So, after the people liberated themselves their former captors forced them to pay for their freedom. It seems to me France should have paid Haiti.

Haiti’s restitution claim, is based largely on the research of Dr. Francis St. Hubert, a member of the government’s Haiti Restitution Commission. According to reports, most of his research was done in New York at the Columbia University Library and the Schomburg Center.

“Following the 1804 revolution that expelled France, Haiti was divided into two districts, northern and southern, but was re-united following the death of Henri Christophe in 1820. Under the new president, Jean Pierre Boyer, diplomatic notes began to be exchanged with various French functionaries on the diplomatic recognition of Haiti.

In 1825, France, which was being encouraged by former plantation owners to invade Haiti and re-enslave the Blacks, issued the Royal Ordinance of 1825, which called for the massive indemnity payments. In addition to the 150 million franc payment, France decreed that French ships and commercial goods entering and leaving Haiti would be discounted at 50 percent, thereby further weakening Haiti’s ability to pay.

According to French officials at the time, the terms of the edict were non-negotiable and to impress the seriousness of the situation upon the Haitians, France delivered the demands by 12 warships armed with 500 canons.

The 150 million franc indemnity was based on profits earned by the colonists, according to a memorandum prepared by their lawyers. In 1789, Saint Domingue (all of Haiti and Santo Domingo) exported 150 million francs worth of products to France.

In 1823, Haitian exports to France totaled 8.5 million francs, exports to England totaled 8.4 million francs, and exports to the United States totaled 13.1 million francs, for a total of 30 million francs.”

To add insult to injury, France forced Haiti to borrow 30 million francs from a French bank that was so astronomically high with interest that even after Haiti repayed the money, they were still 6 million francs short.

Just how did these plantation owners justify their back-pay for their property, crops and commodities?

Reportedly, the indemnity payments were needed to restore 793 sugar plantations, 3,117 coffee estates and 3,906 indigo, cotton and other crop plantations destroyed during the war for independence.

France’s high interest rates of repayment smack of the same racist policies the International Monetary Fund (IMF) & World Banks engage “3rd World Countries” in today. Indeed, the G8 has met to discuss forgiving Africa’s debt. Although, simply forgiving a debt doesn’t quite take into account the gross & dross injustice rampant in the world community against the world’s people.

What France engaged in was the progenitor of the IMF, redlining, and other unjust policies designed to inflict & perpetuate economic slavery. In fact, Haiti continues to struggle economically to this day from these policies. Its not by coincidence, rather by design!

Though whats more unacceptable is the cooperation by our heads of state participate in to oppress the masses of people with consent from the ruling class, in this case the French. President Jean Boyer created a Rural Code to repay French embezzlement. He instituted a tariff from 12% to 16% to compensate for the discounts the French gave themselves as a result of using Haitian goods, textiles and commodities.

In fact, Boyer proclaimed the Rural Code a national debt and he held all citizens liable for the illegitimatacy of French claims.

In her book,  “Child Domestic Service in Haiti and its Historical Underpinnings, Mildred Aristide states that the Rural Codes set the basis for de facto apartheid wedge between rural & urban segments of Haitian society. Not to mention, with the Rural Codes, the dominant class (mulatto) of military officers, merchants, and government officials legally established themselves as the country’s ruling elite class.

“Under the Rural Code, agricultural workers were chained to the land and allowed little or no opportunity to move from place to place. Socializing was made illegal after midnight and the Haitian farmer who did not own property was obligated to sign a three, six or nine-year labor contract with a large property owner. The Code also banned small-scale commerce so that agricultural workers would produce crops strictly for export.

The Rural Code was specifically designed to regulate rural life in order to more efficiently produce export crops with which to pay the indemnity. The taxes levied on production were also used predominantly to pay the indemnity and not to build schools nor to provide other social services to the generators of this great wealth, the peasants. ”

If this doesn’t remind me of the Black Codes here in the U.S. during the same time period. Isn’t it ironic how governments cooperate to oppress the “people” of the world with the same ignoble regimes. This rural code is responsible for the disproportionate distribution of wealth in Haiti to this day. These “peasants” were forced into ‘work gangs’ to work off the national debt incurred by all citizens not just the masses. So, if reparations are achieved just the masses should recieve economic justice.

Mr. St Hubert & the national bank have estimated the exact amount they have demanded from France as as $21,685,135,571.48 at five percent annual interest.

“France is getting off easy,” Mr. St. Hubert told a U.S. newspaper. If Haiti charged 7.5 percent interest on the money, “France would owe $4 trillion today and much more tomorrow.

“The French can debate whether they want to pay as long as they like,” the researcher said, “but at five percent interest, it will cost them $34 per second.”

ITALY TO PAY LIBYA $5 BILLION FOR REPARATIONS…

In CULTURE on September 17, 2008 at UTC.35.30.

Italy is set to pay Libya $5 billion reparations for 30 years of occupation & colonialism in that country that ended in 1943.

Italy Pays for Colonialism!

Italy Pays for Colonialism!

Libyan President Moammar Gadhafi & Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi signed a memo pledging the funds for student grants, infrastructure, construction projects, and pensions for Libyan soldiers who served with the Italians during World War II.

“It is a material and emotional recognition of the mistakes that our country has done to yours during the colonial era,” Mr. Berlusconi told reporters at the airport on his arrival. “This agreement opens the path to further cooperation.”

For the reparations, Italy wants Libya to control the thousands of illegal immigrants that cross the Mediterranean to Italian shores. Libya had promised to curb the illegal immigration, but hasn’t done so to date. Italy says it will fund $500 million for electronic surveillance to patrol Libyan coastlines.

What strategic interest does Italy have in Libya? Libya is rich in natural gas & oil. In fact, Libya supplies a lot of Italy’s natural gas & oil.

“Mr. Berlusconi said the agreement helps open the way to more “gas possibilities, possibilities for Libyan oil, which is of the best quality.”

Italy colonized Libya from 1911 to 1943.

ANALYZING U.S. FINANCE MARKETS, MUSSOLINI MODEL FOR INFRASTRUCTURE

In HOT BUTTON TOPIC, INTERNATIONAL NEWS on September 15, 2008 at UTC.09.30.

This article was good I had to cut & paste it. In light of the financial crises in America today, one has to ask how we got here? This post seeks to answer that question, as well as, add new insight into our nation’s finance markets that have global repurcussions.

Is it the end of the free trade market as we know it? The free market economy is threatened with the rampant government assistance that fiscal conservatives claim to loathe. Though, if no assistance is given then the financial companies will become insolvent.

So, the American people are being asked to put their trust in wall street, despite the fact that wall street deregulation is the sole cause of this latest crisis. There is a ‘patchwork’ of quasi government institutions that are over the regulation of these companies.

However, their inability to regualte effectively is hte reason why AIG, the largest insurance company in the world had to borrow $85 billion to maintain solvency. The terms of that bailout are very steep, AIG borrowed that money at a 30% interest rate. So, by the end of the year if they haven’t made any repayment on the funds they will owe an additional $8.5 billion on top off the original loan.

In addition, the U.S. has now nationalized AIG and controls over 80% of the company. Some are calling this socialism, which is in direct defiance to the corporate structures the U.S. has built this country on. This new financial instrument used by the government is only realized through the use of taxpayer money to insure this deal.

Original Source:

Felix Rohatyn’s PPP Swindles:
The Mussolini Model for Infrastructureby Marcia Merry Baker

“In early November, the latest big-deal PPP (public-private partnership) in the United States was announced: Morgan Stanley won the bid for a 99-year lease, with full fee-collection rights, on four Chicago municipal parking garages, in exchange for an up-front payment of $563 million to the city. In Pennsylvania, home to the nation’s first turnpike system, Gov. Ed Rendell (D) and others are floating the idea of gaining $10-30 billion by granting a private concession to their public highways. New Jersey and Delaware have similar proposals. On Nov. 15, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) was given an award by the National Council for Public Private Partnerships, for his leadership in selling off state assets, such as the $3.85 billion sale of a 75-year private lease for the northern Indiana toll road, in June 2006.

These recent events headline the fact that a swarm of financial deal-makers are right now fanned out across the United States, making the pitch to local and state officials, and especially sub-agencies of all kinds (transportation, water, museums, parks, and social services facilities), that the only salvation for revenue-short governments, is to sell off public works to private interests. The momentum for this campaign, comes from the fact that the financial system is in an end-phase of speculative blowout. Powerful interests are in a search-and-grab mode for ready loot and political control.

Why would any lawmaker dare to fall for such an obvious flim-flam as the “PPP”? Apart from corruption and stupidity—Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) went so far as to create a Congressional PPP Caucus in 2005—most officeholders, like ordinary citizens, have not thought through how an economy works. They have not conceptualized that government has power to create credit, build infrastructure, foster economic activity, and create a tax-revenue base in the process.

Plus, most Boomer-age leaders are not even aware of the FDR precedents for how to handle a breakdown crisis. So they are vulnerable to the PPP pitch, that “private sourcing is the only way you can get the funds to have your infrastructure and keep your government functions going.”

In direct opposition, the LaRouche Political Action Committee is circulating draft Federal legislation for an economic recovery (See accompanying article). As for succumbing to the inducement to sell public assets on the PPP flea market, Lyndon LaRouche reminds officeholders: “These projects were built with public funds. They can not be privatized. And anyone who does it, is going to be accused of theft….”

In reviewing the Midwest highway sell-offs this Summer, he added, “No one should pay tolls on privatized public highways. They shouldn’t pay them. They should defy the tolls! This was paid for by the public. It’s public property. You can not sell public property in this way. it is immoral. It is illegal. No one should pay a toll on a privatized public highway.”

Several cases of such theft show up in the last 20 years of PPP episodes: especially, the 1990s “highway robbery” in Mexico; the current Cross City Tunnel scandal in Sydney, Australia; and the Dulles-Greenway toll road in Northern Virginia. Nonetheless, the United States itself is now a focus of financial predators, since it has been slower to go the PPP route than Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and certain other locations. As of Summer 2006, about half the 50 states have changed their laws, to permit private sell-offs of public assets. The rush is on.
Rohatyn: Chief Thief

The chief thief is Felix Rohatyn, longtime Lazard, and now Lehman Brothers banker. He is personally culpable for deindustrialization and government-asset looting schemes, while at the same time, he presents himself as “Mr. Infrastructure.” Heading up a sub-group of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, called the Commission on Public Infrastructure, founded in 2004, Rohatyn works a circuit of mayors and officials, proclaiming the glories of infrastructure, but stipulating that the only means governments have to finance projects must come from new, privatized arrangements—i.e., private investments and the sine qua non: private control.

Rohatyn wrote the book on PPPs—the infamous case of the Municipal Assistance Corporation in New York City. In 1975, Big MAC, as it was called, was authored by Rohatyn, on behalf of globalized private banking interests, and rammed through the City Council and Albany legislature over June to September, under threat of the City going bankrupt. The gist of the PPP was this: In the name of dealing with the City budget and revenue problems (caused by the national economic downshift to de-industrialization), Big MAC arranged new funding from bond sales, in exchange for the government agreeing to turn over all decisions on infrastructure and budget expenditures to a Big MAC private Financial Control Board. The Board immediately drastically downsized infrastructure of all kinds: hospitals, fire houses, water maintenance, etc., and remained in charge for years.

On March 27 of this year, Rohatyn announced a national Big MAC-style plan for U.S. infrastructure, at a National Press Club briefing for his Public Infrastructure Commission, which included his co-chairman, Warren Rudman.

On April 25-26, Rohatyn again promoted this at an “Infrastructure Crisis Conference” held in Washington, D.C., by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The ASCE News (May, Vol. 31, No. 5) wrote up his appearance with extreme understatement: “As chairman of the Municipal Assistance Corporation in the late 1970s, Rohatyn managed the negotiations that enabled New York City to weather a financial crisis. In his remarks he described a legislative proposal he has been developing that would create a national investment corporation for infrastructure. ‘We can certainly finance it if we have the political will and it’s properly constructed,’ said Rohatyn, who is the president of Rohatyn Associates, LLC, of New York City….”

In party politics terms, Rohatyn pushes his anti-nation plans on the Democratic side, and his Republican counterpart is George Shultz, former Secretary of State. For example, the two of them appeared together in 2004, at an Oct. 9 conference on, “The Privatization of National Security,” held at Middlebury College, and sponsored by Shultz’s Princeton Project on National Security. The two plugged the desirability of privatizing government defense functions. Their common trait is that they are both against the very system of sovereign nation-states. They are the “Economic Hit Men” of the popular book of that title, by John Perkins (Confessions of an Economic Hit Man).

With the newly elected Congress, and similar shifts on the state level, the battle is now joined for how citizens and their representatives will act to reject the Rohatyn-Shultz menace, and instead act to preserve government sovereignty, by facing the economic-breakdown crisis head-on, and taking emergency measures to restore economic functioning and needed infrastructure growth.

This very issue showed up in the November Ohio gubernatorial race, for example. The hands-down winner, Ted Strickland (D), trounced incumbent Ken Blackwell (R)—not simply from voter revulsion at Bush-Cheney Republican Party local corruption—but expressly on the issue of Strickland opposing Blackwell’s call for selling off the Ohio Turnpike. Blackwell spoke of gaining billions for the state budget. Strickland likened it to, “selling your birthright for a bowl of potage.” There are others sounding the alarm.

We here summarize the scope of the PPP assault against nations, and give highlights of the opposition; plus provide a few of the most spectacular scandals. First however, look briefly at the nature of the threat and those behind it.
Mussolini Model

In essence, the PPP recourse is the “Mussolini Model” for public works. The 1920s-30s “Il Duce” Benito Mussolini period was characterized by the most extreme privateering of bridges, ports, housing, and every kind of public works. Today’s form is simply cloaked in such code phrases as, “PPPs,” PPIs (Public Private Initiatives), or other jargon terms, put into use because “privatization” got such a bad name since the 1980s Margaret Thatcher period. The very latest lingo, is “P3s.”

The major players in the buy-out schemes for government infrastructure internationally, are part of a small circle of banks, funds, and principal construction operations, including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Bros., Lazard, and especially the leader of the pack, Macquarie Bank/Macquarie Infrastructure Group, based in Australia, but originating in London. Macquarie often partners with another big player, the Cintra Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte S.A., of Spain. Macquarie/Cintra did this year’s Indiana Toll Road PPP deal; also the 2005 Chicago Skyway; and Macquarie now has the Dulles Greenway in Northern Virginia, the third PPP owner in 11 years of the 15-mile private tollway.

In turn, the pedigree of this network goes back continuously, to some of the very same financial circles involved in the 1930s fascist “corporatist” economics in Europe behind Hitler and Mussolini, called at the time, “synarchist.”

The asset-grab deals themselves, besides having different names, vary in particulars. But they are all thefts. The quickest rip-off is for the PPP outfit to gain the rights to fees and tolls from already-built infrastructure such as highways, bridges, water systems, and the like. These PPPs are politely praised as “mature” investment opportunities. Example: the sell-off of the Chicago Skyway to Macquarie/Cintra, finalized in January 2005, was for a 99-year lease, in exchange for $1.82 billion. Goldman Sachs cadged $9 million for advising on the deal.”

Many of these same companies are in trouble on wall street, is there a corelation? Its hard not to see one, in fact, one might say that due to these & other practices render these corporations insolvent.

WACHOVIA ADMITS SLAVE PROFITEERING

In HOT BUTTON TOPIC, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS, TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE, WORD ON THE STREET on September 15, 2008 at UTC.57.30.

In an article published, in the: Workers World on June 10, 2005 by Betsey Piette disclosed in a June 2, 111 page report states that its predecessor company Bank Of Charleston, S.C. & The Georgia Railroad & Banking Company owned at least “162″ enslaved Africans and accepted another  “529″ as collateral on loans.

The report was published by the History Factory, a firm specializing in corporate archival documentation. In addition, the firm also documents that financier Robert Morris founder of forerunner institution Bank Of North America—utilized profits from his enslaved Africans & slave trade to start Wachovia in 1781.

So, its safe to say that the same Banks many blacks put their money into for savings & investments have been redlined by the same companies. In addition, the “reverse redlining” effects of the sub-prime mortgage issues are partly responsible for the financial collapse of many of today’s financial institutions.

To say that is coincidence is a monumental under statement. There’s a trend going on around the nation. It seems like all this big time financial banks are going belly up. Why? Well, many like the ones mentioned in this post have been cited for their oppressive past. Rather, than pay reparations these companies have chosen to just throw salt onto open wounds within the black community. Perhaps, had they done the right thing: PAY REPARATIONS, maybe they would still be solvent.

The culpability of North Carolina based Wachovia, the country’s 4th largest bank, follows similar admissions by Lehman Brothers, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (parent company Bank One, Savings Bank of Baltimore).

According to reports, Chase denied reports they had any involvement with the profiteering of the slave trade initially. Nonetheless, corporate executives had to acknowledge two predecessor banks accepted 13,000 enslaved Africans as collateral. Then taking ownership of 1,250 when loans defaulted.

So, plantation owners go to the bank for a loan, but need collateral to make the loan process go through. They put up their investment property “Enslaved Africans” to cover their investment. This is so crass and inhumane I can barely type the words to express my utter discontent & disgust!

I’m calling for a boycott of all these insitutions that have profited off the BLOOD, SWEAT, & TEARS of my ancestors. Its really f*&^% up when I as a black man can’t get a damn loan from a bank that made $$ off the labor of my ancestors. That is a travesty of enormous proportions. What we gonna do about it?

Today, many struggles for reparations are being waged. These include the demand for Federal Reparations legislation. There’s also billions of dollars in lawsuits against CSX Railroad Co., R. J. Reynolds and Aetna Inc. for the descendants of enslaved Africans.

Reports state that wachovia issued an apology! As if that will rectify the situation at hand. No, The only way to correct a problem is first to admit it. Next, an independent investigative unit needs to find a way to find justice for those descendants. Were talking about money, plain & simple!

Philadelphia attorney, Michael Coard leader of Avenging the Ancestors Coalition says Wachovia’s apology, is “a publicity stunt that had nothing to do with sincere remorse but everything to do with denying its racism of the past from slave profiteering and of the present from discriminatory redlining.”  In addition, he said; ”If Wachovia is truly remorseful, it would put its money where its mouth is. Talk is cheap!”

“ATAC, as part of the overall reparations movement, has been waging an increasingly successful battle to force the federal government to commemorate the enslaved Africans who were owned by George Washington at the first “White House,” which is at the current site of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.”

Indeed it is, come up off that paper.  The people deserve better from their government, and its our duty to insure the reality, BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!!!

Most people don’t know that the founding father of this nation was a “slave owner.” So, it truly calls into question the authenticity of the constitution & the framers to include women, & people of color. They didn’t. Those white men that signed the declaration, like the white men that control & operate with impunity the highest offices in the land never intended for us to have freedom, justice & equality. The proof is evident within every strata of U.S. life.

The author of this article compares redlining in America to illegal foreign policies instituted by the International Monetary Fund, & The World Bank abroad against 3rd world governments. They are, in effect, the same financial instruments. They charge higher interest rates designed to perpetuate debt. Debt is another word for servitude because if you owe me money, then you’re gonna have to work the debt off.

This is the same thing the Slave owners did to the newly freed Americans. They reduced them to indentured servitude or “sharecropping” until they had enough money to buy their way out of DEBT or SLAVERY! Which in America & abroad is the same thing!!

How long will the people SLEEP, and disillusion themselves with false promises from peope who never had their interest at heart? If not now, then WHEN? If NOT US, then WHO?

These financial institutions could not have become the powerful banks they are today if it weren’t for the TREMENDOUS profits they made off the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and CHATTEL slavery.

FOREIGN SLAVE TRADE MONUMENTS PROTECTED

Abolitionist, Writer John Newton

The tomb of the anti-slavery abolitionist, John Newton and writer of the hymn “Amazing Grace” is one among many monoliths protected because of their linkage to the “Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.”

The International day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is responsible for England’s restoration & rememberance project of the most horrific crime comitted against humanity. The governments desire to preserve these artifacts is proposed to protect the memory for future generations.

“The headstone erected in Watford for George Edward Doney, a Virginian slave who came to Britain and worked for the Earl of Essex, will also be protected.

As will the tomb at Windermere, Cumbria, of Rasselas Belfield, who was born into slavery in Ethiopia but later escaped from a slave ship and gained his freedom.

The fourth monument, in Abney Cemetery, Stoke Newington, north-east London, to be listed commemorates Joanna Vassa, the daughter of Olaudah Equiano – England’s foremost black abolitionist.”

Olaudah Equiano is an author that wrote about his trials & tribulations during his kidnapping, servitude, and subsequent liberation. He is one the first people to chronicle his experiences as an enslaved African, in fact his story predatres the Amistad.

Olaudah’s given name by his oppressors was Gustavus Vassas a name which implies his station as servant in the language of his oppressors. In reading the autobiography one can’t help but getting swept up in the incredible will power & humility in which he lived.

“Monuments upgraded in importance include Picton House, Kingston upon Thames, which was bought in 1795 by slave Cesar Picton who went on to become a successful coal merchant.

The statue in Bloomsbury Square, London, of MP Charles James Fox, who introduced the resolution on the abolition of the slave trade which was passed by Parliament in 1807, has also been upgraded.”

“These new listings and upgrades show the close and continuing historical and social links that much of our heritage has to the history of slavery both in this country and from around the world,”  said Margaret Hodge, Culture Minister.

THE ORIGIN OF LEHMAN BROTHERS, DIVINE REVERSAL!

In HOT BUTTON TOPIC, INTERNATIONAL NEWS, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS, TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE on September 15, 2008 at UTC.30.30.

Lehman Brothers was one of 17 defendants in a class action lawsuit that suggested they either profited with “slave labor”, or profited from the “Slave Trade.” In 2003, the company admitted that the three brothers that founded the company in 1850 purchased one slave, and may have owned others, though it was said there was no evidence that the “slaves” were used to make money for the company.

Of course, they made money for the company, but you wouldn’t have a record of the fact because “enslaved persons” didn’t get paid for their labor. It was free forced labor. So, why would anyone suggest that someone owned slave(s), but there’s no indication of them making money? Someone has something to hide.

Why would you purchase an enslaved individual, if you have no purpose or intention to put them to work? You wouldn’t!

On the other hand, Lehman Brothers also financially backed numerous private prison corporations. For example, Cornell Companies, Inc.; Corrections Corporation of America and Wackenhut Corrections Corporation.

So here is a company that has profited off the collective oppression of Black people in the form of Slave ownership. In addition, today this company has rescued prison corporations from going into bankruptcy, and provided financial backing to the same companies. For this company to profit on the privatization of the prison industrial complex is indelible of the companies origin.

For Lehman Brothers to profit from its for profit prison investments smacks of discrimination and covert racism. The prison system disproportionately affects black men with higher incarceration rates. Moreover, the cycle of disenfranchisement continues from the “Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, to Jim Crow, to the prison industrial complex.”

Lehman Brothershas also profited from Predatory lending habits. A practice that largely targets low-income people of color with deceptive loans that carry enormous interest rates.

In 2003, a Federal jury found Lehman Brothers liable for 10% of $51 million awarded to a predatory lending lawsuit against mortgage company First Alliance Corp.

So, the history of this ‘cornerstone” of American finance has a history of “slave ownership”, “predatory lending and pepetuation of the prison industrial complex. Safe to say African-Americans celebrate the liquidation of this historically vile & wicked company.

All of these companies listed above have benefited from centuries of ill treatment towards African people. However, the Most High’s judgement never sleeps, his majesty is ETERNAL!!

What else would you call the financial collapse of a cornerstone in American finance history? You must call it what it is: A DIVINE REVERSAL!!

NEVER SAY DIE, SFLA BULLS COMEBACK W/ LATE 43 YD FG

In SPORTS on September 13, 2008 at UTC.46.30.

The #19 ranked South Florida Bulls looked sluggish, and a step or two slow in the first quarter of their big time matchup with #13 ranked Kansas on Friday. The Bulls opened the game with a couple three and outs with a lackluster effort in the beginning of the game.

On the other side of the ball, Reesing QB for KU came out firing on all cylinders shredding the Bulls secondary for 10 quick hitting points in the first quarter.

Meanwhile USF got on the board with a FG early in the 2nd quarter. This game didn’t start poppin for USF until the 3rd quarter. The BUlls defense came up big time with pressure on Reesing. Causing disruptions, batted balls, and blanketing coverage in the secondary. The George Selvie led defense shut the “Rock & Jock” JayHawks offense down early in the 3rd quarter.

Selvie got his first sack of the season with a sweet ankle grab on reesing that uprooted his leverage and dropped him for a loss. He was so active, I was almost sure he had two sacks on hte night, with a possible 3rd in a gang tackle of Reesing late in the game. Selvie, double teamed all night long had numerous highlight plays against an explosive offense that lit the Bulls defensive backs & corners up.

All in all, that BULLS defense played inspired DEFENSE in the 3rd quarter. They HELD the powerful JAYS offense that saw Reesing blow up Louisana Tech for 412 yds last week, to just NINE (9) yards of offense in the 3rd quarter.

WOW!! That’s BIG TIME D!!!

With the momentum at their backs the BULLS offense led by Matt Groethe marched down the field in 1:09 seconds early in the 3Q. Groethe capped the march with a 24 yard scramble looking like a tailback cutting & finding seams within the defense. This kid has an all-around game. He hit Taurus Johnson for a deep plays. He utilized Mitchell and an assortment of SFLA recievers all night. This team is deep at the skilled positions.

The BULLS corp of running back by committee saw some BIG time running b/w the tackles by the 4th string (that right 4th string) tailback #33 Taylor from Lakeland. Taylor, ran over #25 Stuckey, like a bulldozer clears debris on two long runs early in the 3rd quarter.

Taylor along with Mo Plancher from the BULLS churned up yardage, the clock, and the Jays defense much of he 3rd quarter. Taylor had those two highlight runs as he ran over many of the JAYS DB’s piling up yardage in the process. At one point he averaged 7.1 yards per carry with over 71 total yards.

Wilson & Meir for the JayHawks had 180/120 yards respectively. Meir payed dearly for one play out along het sideline at the first down marker, he made the catch initially, but Murphy CB for USF timed him perfectly as he turned around with a powerful POP right b/w his numbers. Meir, stunned & dazed lay prone for a moment as the ball rolled from his hands. INcomplete pass, BULLS hold the JAYS offense again to 3 and out.

Reesing scored two touchdowns in the 4th, that saw the game tied at 34-34. The BULLS offense had been stopped on two previous drives, so the pressure was tense for the SFLA to break the tie in regulation to avoid an overtime game for the 2nd week in a row.

Groethe and da BULLS did just that marching down field goal range for their new kicker. Alvarado their starting kicker went 1-4 through the first two games, and Coach Leavitt wasn’t gonna trust that guy to WIN for SFLA.

Bonani, USF’s replacement comes out having gone 2-3 on the game 24, 35 FGM; 41 yd FGA. The stadium fell silent. KU coach calls timeout to try an ice the young kicker with the biggest kick and game in his short lived career.

He came back out measured his steps and let it fly….the kick seemed to catch a draft and bend back to the left in between the uprights, just clearing the right post by no more than 24 inches….The distance was never in question. USF WINS as the the remaining :02 seconds of the game tick down. KU UPSET, BULLS CRUSH TOP RANKED OPPONENT!!

FL. VOTER RESTORATION FOR NON-VIOLENT OFENDERS

Governor Charlie Crist’s Executive Order

*Require a voter-registration application to be included in every Restoration of Civil Rights Certificate mailed from the Parole Commission.

*Make publicly accessible a redesigned Florida Parole Commission Web site to let felons look up and print a copy of their restoration certificate.

*Provide on the Web site a direct link to the Division of Elections’ voter-registration Web site.

“I believe that government should explore every opportunity to ease the notification process and provide as much information about restoration of civil rights,” Crist said in a statement. “The changes made today will allow ex-offenders to immediately register to vote and participate in the democratic process.”

“Still, had the governor acted sooner, “thousands more Floridians would have benefited,” said Muslima Lewis, a lawyer and director of the Racial Justice and Voting Rights Projects for the ACLU in Miami.”

FLORIDA CLEMENCY & VOTER RESTORATION

In ELECTION 08, HOT BUTTON TOPIC, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, Politics on September 12, 2008 at UTC.23.30.

What is clemency? Clemency means showing mercy to a criminal for a crime committed. To lessen the penalty of the crime without forgiving the crime itself.

Florida’s clemency laws have been on the books for 137 years. Antiquated? Yes. Florida is one of seven states that doesn’t restore the rights of its ex-convicts after time has been served. These rights extend, but aren’t limited to: the right to vote, right to serve on juries, right to legally bear arms, and the right to apply & recieve state occcupational licenses.

In fact, Florida leads the nation with the most disenfranchised voters. An ex-convicts rights in Florida aren’t automatically restored upon release as in other states. But Why? After the sentence has been completed the stigmatization of criminalization should be removed. Not in Florida, where at least 50,000 individuals haven’t had their rights restored.

Some have suggested that the law is racially motivated, since the majority of those men & women incarcerated are disproportionately affected happen to be African-American, Latino, and other ethnic “minorities.”

There is a reported 8 million voters who are currently unregistered to vote. If you are one of them or know one of them, please encourage them to register. If they are an ex-convict or former felon, please encourage them to find out if they are eligible to have their CIvil Rights restored fully.

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE HUNT FOR BIN LADEN?

In INTERNATIONAL NEWS, Politics on September 12, 2008 at UTC.02.30.

Just a few days after the 9/11 attacks, President Bush said this to congress, “any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime.” Reports hae said that his hiideout is somewhere near the mountain region of the Pakistani/Afghanistani border. So, why hasn’t the Bush administration listed Pakistan as a hostile regime, since numerous reports suggest Bin laden & Al Qaeda are bunkered in the area?

Seven Years later What we Know:

”Bin Laden is presumed to have been in Afghanistan on 9/11 and to have fled that nation during the battle at Tora Bora in December of 2001. Gary Berntsen, who was the CIA officer in charge on the ground, told me that his request for Army Rangers to prevent Bin Laden’s escape into Pakistan was denied, and sure enough, that’s where Bin Laden went.

“We now know that in late 2005, the CIA disbanded Alec Station, the FBI-CIA unit dedicated to finding bin Laden, something that was reported on July 4, 2006, by the New York Times. At the time, I hoped we’d closed the bin Laden unit because Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was fully engaged in the hunt in his country’s northwest territories, where the duo were supposedly hiding. In September 2006, however, Musharraf reached an accord with tribal leaders there, notorious for their refusal to hand over a guest. In doing so, he agreed to give them continued free rein.”

So, we had Bin Laden in our sights, but due to bureaucracy we couldn’t proceed with the search. Why didn’t we “smoke ‘em out!” Or, why didn’t we build consensus within the International community and our allies to force the Musharraf government to allow our Rangers access to Pakistani land?

Our country basically stood passive as this notorious mass murderer reigned free & clear in the North West region of Pakistan. That is a troubling aspect of our countries foreign policy. Our leaders didn’t have the respect of world leaders to have access granted on an international fugitive. That tells me a lot about the perception of America’s brand abroad.

“May 24, 2007, White House news conference, when asked why Osama was still at large, President Bush offered his usual refrain: “Because we haven’t got him yet … That’s why. And he’s hiding, and we’re looking, and we will continue to look until we bring him to justice.”

“On May 20, 2007, the Times reported that we (USA) were paying $80 million a month to Pakistan for its supposed counterterrorism efforts, for a total of $5.6 billion.”

So, we pay an entire country to fight our terrotist enemies for us. However, these are the same guys who told us they brokered a treaty with area tribesmen who wouldn’t ‘turn over’ their guests to the Army rangers who were in HOT pursuit back in 12/01. I feel it critical to belabor this point because we are currently pursuing the same strategy in Irag today.

America has former Shia militia and former Al Qaeda operatives under payroll in Iraq to help quell sectarian violence. In certain areas where we lost our competitive advantage within hotly contested regions within Iraq we employ formerly hostile regimes to fight on our behalf.

Are there any repurcussions to this strategy? Well, let me remind you that Bin Laden was once an American ally that fought off communist Russia with the support of American strategy. Afterwards, when the American military machine cut off all support, Bin Laden and crew were outraged with the US, and vowed to make the infidels pay.

One has to ask, has the government learned its lessons from the mistakes of its past? From the looks of it, NO!

3RD TIME IS A CHARM, SERENA WINS CHAMPIONSHIP!!

In SPORTS, TENNIS, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS on September 10, 2008 at UTC.15.30.
ATOP THE TENNIS WORLD, SERENA

ATOP THE TENNIS WORLD, SERENA

Its been more than 5 years since she last one here at the U.S. Open, this was the same championship that she won first. This is the tournament that started the legend of Serena Williams. With her 3rd US Open Championship, a cool $1.5 million for the winner, and a return to the top of the world is worthy of history books. Serena Williams is an icon, legend, and the Best female tennis player in the world. No doubt about it!

No other player has held the # 1 seed at one time, lost it, then regained it at a later time. Ms. Williams has done just that, she’s a two time #1 player in the world, and her legacy sits alone in the pantheon of greats like Althea Gibson, and Arthur Ashe. She is the quintessential champion. Her poise, grace, and poise are an inspiration for everyone, especially coffee & caramel complexioned little black girls that idolize her.

Serena never lost a set during her climatic climb back to the national spotlight. Her toughest competitor came from her older sister Venus in a prime time quarter final matchup, that felt more like a final, and should have been reserved as such.

Serena replaces Anna Ivanovic atop the WTA rankings. No other player on tour is half as good as the Williams’ sisters. There low rankings are a result of fewer tournaments played, as opposed, to other players whom ranked higher. Though, Serena has said publicly that her sole desire was to reclaim her top seed status.

WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATION {WTA} RANKINGS 9/9/08

  1. SERENA WILLIAMS
  2. JELENA JANKOVIC
  3. ANNA IVANOVIC

Williams beat Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 in the final and didn’t lose a set in the process. She spoke afterwards about her return to the top of the mountain. Despite the fact, most of her critics had written off her return to world # 1.

She never doubted, never wavered, and never quit on herself, nor her goal. She overcame all odds, injury, time away from the game, her age (26), her race, her being in big sisters shadow. She eclipsed all of those barriers and left her awesome game, and infectious smile in the wake.

“Oh, yeah,” she said Monday. “I think a lot of people, probably everyone thought (that). I always felt that I can be No. 1 if I really put in the effort.”

“I enjoyed the journey because it wasn’t overnight,” she said. “It wasn’t like it just happened.”

Indeed, its been a long journey, on a SHORT path. Pictured above is Ms. Williams in a sexy red dress, posed with her championship trophy in the heart of downtown NYC Times Square, Manhattan. This photo will be a collectors item because it juxtaposes Serena amid teh hustle & bustle of the greates city in the world, as she smiles with her token of achievement in a sultry sensual fire engine red eye-poppin dress..

Serena is SMOKIN HOT, on & off the court.

In HOT BUTTON TOPIC, NBA, PHILOSOPHY OF SPORT, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, Politics, SPORTS on September 10, 2008 at UTC.26.30.

“We’re showing that we care about something bigger than the size of our cars or how fast our sports cars are. … To me it’s pretty simple: When you’re a professional athlete and people look up to you, you have a responsibility to represent something,” said Andrew Ferrence.

Wow, and the rub on most athletes is that they’re spoiled, selfish, and aloof. This guy shatters all that hyperbole with righteous action.

‘Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference has considered himself a practicing environmentalist. When the weather permits, he leaves his hybrid car at home and bikes to games.’ He composts. “Pretty much go down the list, and I try to do it in my personal life,” he says.

I’ve never watched an NHL game a dy in my life, although, I can support anyone trying to utilize their celebrity to a worthy cause that affects al of us. Its commendable that someone who is wealthy takes time to empathize with the world we live. Moreover, to practice the tenets first hand in your own day-day life. In this instant gratification, Me-first society that’s a story truly worth reporting.

Remember in the mid 90’s, when the iconic Michael Jordan ostracized his community by not supporting liberal African-American candidate Harvey Gantt in his bid for a Senate seat in North Carolina. Jordan’s comment infuriated many a leader & activist, “Republicans buy shoes, too.”

Fast forward to one of today’s iconic players Baron Davis and his comments about his desire to speak out, and to take an active role in the presidential campaign, “the more I spoke out about politics, the more I would turn corporate sponsors off,” he esponded, “Who gives a s—?”

That alone shows you a stark difference between the last two generations of blacks in America. Yesterday, blacks were still operating under outdated philosophies as pertained to claiming voice, identity, solidarity, and activism. Still, nothing is in a vacuum.

We honor Muhammad Ali and his stance against the Vietnam War. Though, his role may have sparked by his fisrt hand role as draftee. It really matters not why, rather the fact that he left an example of a conscientious athlete willing to risk $$, fame and status to take a politival stance. History absolves all because with the passage of time, tensions allay therefore allowing for objectivity.

One would be hard pressed to find support of a superstar today that issued such a crass remark as Jordan’s back in the day. Although, we may not have to look that far. Lebron James wears # 23, and has been dubbed the “The Chosen One.”

When fellow teammate, Ira Newble wrote an open letter to the Chinese government about its role in the genocide in Darfur, he suggested that all his CLEVELAND CAVS team also sign it. Most did, according to reports, however Mr. James elected not to. HIs remark was frigid & seemingly disingenious, “claiming that he was insufficiently informed on the issues to take a stand, many suspected that, in fact, his off-court income, particularly from Nike, drove his decision.

Of course it did, NIKE is made in China, not to mention the Chinese have the biggest market in the world. James has said he wants to the 1st Billionaire athlete. I hope when he gets there he still remembers all those who came before him, that made his dreams a reality. Even though, James’ support of Barack Obama is honorable, by giving $20,000 to a campaign group to elect Obama.

What does it say when an athlete puts his own wants before the larger community? Lebron doesn’t need a billion dollars, I’m sure with his endorsements, and NBA salary he has more money now then he knows what to do with. So, what are we left to think after statements like these from the biggest stars Jordan, James etc.

I say boycott all products that they endorse, and then sanction them for those disparaging comments. These talking heads should be subject to the same intense scrutiny anyone else in the public eye are held to. In addition, they need to be held accountable. As a tax payer’s, fans, and American citizens it is our duty to do so.

The genocide in Darfur is horrendous, and the world’s silence is reminiscent of Rwanda. For anyone in a position of power to sit idly by as this crises goes on unabated is absolutely unacceptable, and the repurcussions will be swift.

Why are crises of humanity more tolerable in Africa, moreso than other continent in the world? Is it because Africa doesn’t hold any value to our foreign policy? Or, is it more sinister and directly corelated to race?

We live in a different world today, thank goodness some athletic stars have the integrity to answer teh call of the day: CHANGE!. So, for any black athlete to shirk his/her responsibility to the larger black community they come from is irresponsible. There is definitely a resurgence of activism & political action in the world of sports. Still, the biggest names cower behind corporate sponsorships, which is antaganistic, and disloyal.

WAR ON 1-4, USF BULLS OUTLAST UCF KNIGHTS OT, 31-24

In NCAA 2008, NCAA [F], SPORTS on September 7, 2008 at UTC.49.30.

If this is the last time these two schools, seperated by just 90 miles on I-4 play, then it was a memorable rivalry.

IT WAS RAUCUS!!!

This was really entertaining and extremely competitive game that went to overtime, between two teams that are up and coming in the State of Florida. This game will be talked about for a long time. it was an instant classic, and had all the great suspense you expect in a heated rivalry.

Both teams struggled early, though both had early highlights. USF struck first putting 10 points on the board. UCF responded with a 91 yard kick off return that sent the BrightHouse Stadium into an uproar. The videop camera could be seen jumping with the rhythm of the UCF faithful bouncing up & down. IT WAS DIZZYING…

The USF/UCF game was back an forth, and it was full of suspense down to the wire. In fact, the game went to overtime as The UCF Knights scored two touchdowns in the latter stages of the 4th quarter. Michael Graeco, UCF quarterback struggled perilously through the first 3 quarters.

In overtime, Taurus Johnson got free in the end zone to put pressure on the Knights to match. While the Knights moved the ball early in overtime, a costly penalty made the yardage insurmountable. They had a makeable 3rd & 1, to a  challenging 4th & 6.

Graeco, feeling the pocket collapse, scampered for about 5 1/2 yards. The measuring chains were brought out, the Knights, with I feel was bad placement, were just inches short. Game Over.

USF WINS!!!!!

USF is still the jewel in the Big East as West Virginia went down today to East Carolina. A number of Big East teams have fallen to lesser competition, and the pressure was squarely on the Bulls to hold court in this Central Florida rivalry.

SERENA & COMMON, TENNIS MEETS HIP-HOP…

In HOT BUTTON TOPIC, SPORTS, TENNIS, WORD ON THE STREET on September 6, 2008 at UTC.59.30.

Serena Williams has a new boyfriend. At least, its new to me. I heard reports that she was dating the double threat Rapper, & actor Common. Though, I just brushed it off because everyone knows the Williams sisters have been poster girls for “Colored Girls who considered dating the Rainbow when brothers weren’t Enough.”

This is an obvious alliteration to the critically acclaimed novel, and play: “For Colored Girls Who considered Suicide When the Rainbow wasn’t Enough.”

Serena & Common seems like a strange couple at first, but when you consider how domineering Richard Williams is in her life, then its plausible to see how she can link with the “conscious’ rappin’ stylings of Common. I mean he & Erykah Badu have been linked in the past, and on the surface there aren’t many parallels between these two sisters.

Although, I’m sure happy as hell for Serena. She definitely needs a brother like Common on her team. Strong, Articulate, Respectable, Conscious, and Super Star. Common is one of the very few Hip-Hop artists I’d actually put down my hard earned cash to support. I respect his music, and support his career, he’s been in the game for a while underground. now, he has his mainstream appeal & marketability.

SERENA WILLIAMS #1 PLAYER IN THE WORLD….

In SPORTS, TENNIS on September 6, 2008 at UTC.03.30.

Serena Williams is one victory away from being the #1 player in the world again. She dismantled her sister in a quarter final thriller earlier in the week. Next, she dispatched Dinara Safina in a semi final coup, with a 6-3, 6-2 dominant victory.

She’s said all year that she wants to be number one in the world again. Judging from her play thus far she will win the Open ad regain her #1 seeding. How long she holds it, well that’s another question. Neither, Serena or her sister Venus looked very competitive in Beijing last month in the Olympics.

With that said, as long as she brings her “A” game, there is no one stronger or more intimidating. Her finals competition says that the last time they played against one another, she couldn’t even look at her across the net, “she was just so intimidating!”

Indeed, the tenacity Serena engenders on the court is awe inspiring to her fans, yet fearsome to her opponents. Tomorrow night, primetime Serena Williams will represent her country at the last major Grand Slam competition for the season. If she wins the final, she’ll return back to national & international prominence. The nation will be watching, as she is the lone hope of  American women’s  tennis respectability. No American has won the Open since her last victory in New York in 2003.

No other WTA player in the history of the game has lost her seeding as number one, to regain it back at another time in her career. Serena can make history as a comeback champion. Only this time she’s clearly at her peak, and the competition is light years away. Only Venus is in the same stratosphere with Serena.

MYSTIC THOUGHT, AN INTRODUCTION…

In AWARENESS OF SELF, ROOTZ & KULCHA, WORD SOUND & POWER on September 6, 2008 at UTC.42.30.

Seeking control of the mind in its numerous endeavors at any given time, in any given place is a great feat. Considering the mind has so many conflicting & competing objects that vie for its attention, its a wonder mankind has the time at all to dedicate itself to the attainment of the higher sciences.

By higher sciences, I mean specifically Grammar, Rhetoric, Logic, Arithmetic, Astronomy, Geometry, and Music. Otherwise known as the seven liberal arts, those arts that man uses to liberate himself from material fetters. Fetters that bind a man’s soul to level of beast if subsequent proficiency isn’t developed to eradicate lower vibrations.

Consider this Hindu scripture, “Seek, find and follow a pure line of thought.” Similarly, we find a passage in scripture that suggests the same. In the book of Matthew 7:7, “Ask and you shall recieve, seek & you shall find, & knock an the door shall be opened unto you.”

Both scriptures entail the process of revelation, & the adherence to a centralized point. Which brings a heightened awareness of the mental capacity to endure trials and tribulations. In fact, the mind is slower to agitate when it is focused on a singular object.

Everything in the Universe is in a constant state of motion. All moves, all the time. The mind is no different, so with the practice of meditation the mind can be strengthened to endure the constant bombardment of forces.

In Physics, there is an experiment where a tuning fork vibrates, when the corresponding note is struck on the keys of a piano. The vibratory rate like a radio frequency extends outward seeking a receptor, or receptive mind.

For example, imagine sitting in a room full of people waiting for a lecture. When the speaker enters the room the vibratory energy within the room changes to varying degrees depending on the clarity of thought of the audience participants.

This is why speakers always “seek out” ‘the audience face’ within the crowd to draw energy from. Think about that for a minute, and then you’ll have a good idea about the mystical power of thought & the mind….

10 TIE-BREAKER QUITTER, SERENA UPSETS VENUS IN QF

In PHILOSOPHY OF SPORT, SPORTS, TENNIS on September 4, 2008 at UTC.12.30.

I’ve never seen a tennis match that had a first & second set tiebreaker. The tiebreakers had tiebreakers. These two Nubian Goddesses battled like mighty Ashanti warriors. Venus cranked forehands hard and flat skidding off of lines. Serena dug deep and returned a lot of balls that wel out of reach of normal players.

Though, this wasn’t your normal quarter final. It was more like a final. The primetime start. The lights, the crowd, the electricity. The Williams sisters in their avante guard best. Both sisters played exceptional high level tennis.

Though, Venus let this match slip away with sloppy untimely play that left her dejected in defeat. Venus had 10 MATCH POINTS to close out this match. Many times she served with the match on her raquet. She double faulted, just surrendered to Serena’s will. However, it was so evenly matched, either sister could have walked away with thsi victory.

What up with the WTA for placing them against one another so early in the Open? They are the biggest market draw, so they should only meet in finals on the weekend, when everyone can really enjoy this tennis. They botched this one. They better ask sombody next time, or its gonna cost tehm ratings.

If you missed this match, then you missed an instant classic of epoch proportions. I mean both sisters raised their level of play to unearthly. Seriously, I was in utter disbelief, and theres never been a moment I’m at a lost for words watching SERENA & VENUS. They left a brother speechless. Utterly!!! LOL

Venus & Serena are teh best players in teh world right now, no one is even close. I don’t care what the rankings suggest. No other active player on tour has more majors than them. Who else has their swagger? Who? Because they play so few tournaments their rankings suffer. Though, now they are said to be focusing soley on their rankings. The field better beware.

If Serena wins the U.S. Open then she’ll be the world’s number one. Another reason to support Ms. Williams. She’s highly favored, and motivated after a poor showing in Beijing in singles.

Thank you ladies for my special gift on this special day….. GO SERENA!!!!  ;)

THE RNC, THOUGHTS & IDEAS….

In PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, Politics, SCIENCE OF POLITICS on September 4, 2008 at UTC.10.30.

Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin was well rehearsed on her ‘talking points’ and briefs. She came out in full support of Sen. John McCain early, then she preceded to introduce her family to America. She even took the opportunity to voice her support for special-needs children, an admirable gesture from an unseasoned politician on this stage.

She laid out her barbs and lines to be quoted by pundits & commentators alike. Now, the question is how will she respond when the “gloves are off ” against her? She talked the tough talk. Many are calling her McCain’s ‘attack dog.’

  • Her service as Mayor is is tangible responsibilty, Obama’s expereince is questioned?
  • Her service as Commander in Chief of the National guard is more “Executive experience” than the Dem. nom.
  • Her Gubernatorial expereince is more “cattle and less HAT, than Obama’s record.

With all this controversy surrounding her already, not even a week into her selection, and less than 24 hours after her nomination, she might want to ‘fall back.’ She might wanna pace herself because the cheers can quickly become boos, as witnessed tonight during her speech. She was mentioning something about liberals and the crowd was howling, it took her while to seize control, to continue her ‘talking head’ routine.

Still, on the other hand, the RNC was a touching moment worthy of recognition. Indeed, all children in America need attention & recognition, including equal access to quality education, equal rights as protected under the law, equal access to healthcare to prevent illness, equal access to financial management to build a liquid stream of cash flow.

V.P. Palin gave us many points of view to consider, though I want to now what makes her think she entice Obama into a debate?  She needs to stay in her lane, and play her position. Its commendable of her to pull a Hilary Clinton impersonation by preying on Obama’s passivity. Though, I think his passivity is more strategy than personality—there is a difference.

America may be a lot of things, but I hasten to think she’s this gullible to fall for this obvious last ditch effort to breath life in the geriatric old party!!! (no disrespect to the elderly). All things being equal, what company or organization could McCain lead in this stage & condition in his life. My grandmother is his age, and she says he’s too old.

Situational irony because blacks at first ranted against Obama, and women railed against Clinton, at one time. People often times discriminate against their own. We are our own worst judge, & critic.

McCain has served well, but that doesn’t mean he’s given the Presidency becasue of time honored tradition served, survived “Hanoi Hilton’ and BOOM he’s in the White House. I mean what’s really going on here?

There are two world’s clashing here, one stuck irrevocably to the past, and the other pressed insatiably toward the future. All the momentum in the world was with the 88,000 supporters for the candidate from Illinois, and the V.P. selection from Delaware. Its gonna get rougher yet, and the road will be rocky, though the journey is consummated in the city Benjamin Banneker surveyed, cartography(ed), and designed.

The relevance of Banneker is obvious, here was an African/American that was free. He helped in the design & layout of D.C. He met with Washington & the French surveyor to discuss design. Banneker then, Obama now. History is a current event!

Consider that.

V.P. NOMINEE PALIN, BREWING CONTROVERSY

In ELECTION 08, HOT BUTTON TOPIC, PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION on September 2, 2008 at UTC.56.30.

Not even a full week after her selection as McCain’s VP choice, a whirl wind of news surrounds the presumptive nominee. Sarah Palin, a social conservative who serves as the Alaskan governor, is causing some to call into question, to what extent was her V.P. vetting? Just how thorough did the McCain camp go into her background? It certainly calls into question, his exercise in judgement.

Gov. Palin’s 17 year old daughter is 5 months pregnant with a child from her high school boyfriend. Ironically, its the conservative platform that espouses ABSTINENCE! With this revelation seemingly to smack with contradiction according to those puritanical views.

What would the right wing media report if this was Obama’s daughter? To his credit, Obama has said “A person’s family should be off limits, and has no place in this election.”

While life happens, it is best not to rush to judgement in the wake of this latest revelation concerning Palin’s family. With all the apocolyptic weather patterns, pervasive war in the middle east, genocide in Darfur, rising costs of food & energy, and domestic economic uncertainty this hardly qualifies as newsworthy.

Albeit, we happen to learn of this news in the middle of a heated general election campaign . The GOP doesn’t need any more controversy considering how poorly their polls have cast the incumbent president which is also Republican.

I had the feeling when she was selected that there was more to her than we knew. Less than a week, I’ve heard a few controversial themes connected to her name. Moreover, she’s still the presumtive nominee, which means there could be a roll call vote on the floor of the GOP convention to nominate another selection for Vice-President.

McCAIN SELECTS PALIN AS V.P.

In ELECTION 08, HOT BUTTON TOPIC, Politics on September 1, 2008 at UTC.00.30.

Senator John McCain surprised everybody with his Vice Presidential selection. The newly elected, first term Governor of Alaska is a former beauty contestant. Indeed, she’s younger than the Democratic frontrunner, Sen. Obama.  She’s just 44 years old, and her experience is marginal at best.

Public opinion suggests that McCain made this selection based on the mistaken notion that he could sway Sen. Clinton voters. Although, it seems that Palin may or may not survive the media speculation of her candidacy.

FATHER OF NEGRITUDE, JOINS ANCESTRAL REALM

In AWARENESS OF SELF, CULTURE, DIASPORA TALK, PAN-AFRICAN, THE PEOPLE'S NEWS on September 1, 2008 at UTC.39.30.
Martiniquian-born French poet Aime Cesaire, the 'Father of Negritude,' shown in a 2006 photograph. Cesaire, 94, died April 17, 2008.

Martiniquian-born French poet Aime Cesaire, the

Aime Cesaire was a black literary intellectual giant. He along with Leopold Senghor of Senegal, and Leon Damas of French Guiana created the idea & movement, Negritude. Afer, the death of Senghor in 2001, Cesaire was the lone advocate of the Negritude movement which called into question French colonialism.

His anti-colonial platform, agitated a full out intellectual assault into French rationalizations, as related to black culture through the lens of French subjects. For Cesaire, his tour de force against the inhumanity of colonialism was the indelible impressions cast from the enslavement of his African ancestors.

The world that Cesaire saw in the 1930’s was frought from overwhelming & consistent dehumanization of indigenous cultures within the African continent. Combined with the global denigration of all things associated with Black culture, then we can effectively intuit the mental effects of a man reared in the vacuum of a French caribbean subject. In fact, it was his grappling with this inviolable conundrum that precipitated his literary activism.

Cesaire was born in the French colony Martinique in 1913. Aime Cesaire lived to the ripe age of 93 years old. He was best known for his poetry, in fact he was inspired by the writers of the Harlem renaissance. Namely, Langston Hughes. His epoch piece, Cahier d’un retour au pays natal [Notebook of a Return to My Native Land], was explorative of the collective consciousness as shared with Pan-Africans throughout the diaspora.

His central theme in his poems was the cultivation of a redefinition of blackness. Throwing off colonial shackles & psychological images of enslavement by reinterpreting the quintessential being & personhood of the Black self. One could argue that Cesaire was a progenitor of black psychology, & sociology from his irreverent critiques of domination, imperialism, and reification.

Consider the tone & meter of this piece which was the catalyst behind the concept of ‘Negritude’ :

my negritude is not a stone, its deafness heaved against the clamor of day

my negritude is not a film of dead water on the dead eye of earth

my negritude is neither a tower nor a cathedral

it delves into the red flesh of the soil

it delves into the burning flesh of the sky

it digs through the dark accretions that weigh down its righteous patience.’

(Translation by Gregson Davis)

Another treastise of Cesaire’s literature was his ability to critique diverse francophone cultures within the African diaspora. His play, La tragédie du roi Christophe,” explored life after the Haitian liberation struggle, in particular, the machinations of Emperor Henri Christophe. Similarly, the African diaspora saw the violent overthrow of the Prime Minister of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba by Belgian forces. The infamous “Stanleyville paratroopers” depicts the colonial insurrection, despite Lumumba’s desire to wield autonomy & sovereignty for his country.

French President Nicolas Sarzoky attended the funeral.

French President Nicolas Sarzoky attended the funeral.

It was this setting that inspired Cesaire’s second play, “Une saison au Congo (A Season in the Congo).”  Cesaire play drew stark parallels between Haitian struggle & the global struggle for Africans at home & abroad. In may ways, Cesaire’s thematic work was Pan-Africanist & revolutionist in nature and form. His work won critical acclaim from all students of liberation movements across the 7 continents.

Consider his poignant words, when he relishes Lumumba as an African prophet, (indeed many in the diaspora saw Lumumba this way):

As for Africa. I know that, for all her weakness and her divisions, she shall not fail us! For after all, here, of sift, sun and water—of their solemn mating—here man was born.’

Alas, this poem was reflective of the prominence Cesaire placed on Africa as a heritage site for all Africans throughout the diaspora. The motherland served as a spiritual center for all of her sons & daughters no matter the nationality, language, or cultural traditions. Africa, is the genesis of man & woman kind that engenders the rise of a literary, intellectual & cultural motif to serve the cause of absolute liberation.

Cesaire, as a literary figure and founder of the concept of Negritude espoused this philosophy deftly. His name shall forever be moist on the lips of Pan-African literary freedom fighters across the four corners of the globe.

In the proverbial words of our ancestors, “A giant tree has fallen!” Though legendary through his work, he shall never be forgotten.
